It's 2:00 am and I am starting my next blog for Artistic Paints. Why am I up so late you ask? I ask myself the same thing. Actually, I am thinking about the latest painting I did just the other day. I am not a strong abstract painter, I can admit that, but I truly want to learn. I watch youtube videos of artists creating abstracts and think "I can do that!" NOT! Turns out abstract art is not as easy as it looks.
Creating an abstract is a thoughtful process. It involves planning and lots of creativity. What it isn't is just a bunch of colors thrown on a canvas. Abstract art involves skill and inventive thinking. It is an art form that does not attempt to reflect reality as we know it, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
My first attempts at an abstract ended up in the garbage. Actually, my first 10 attempts ended up in the garbage! But I persevered and came up with something that caught attention. I call this painting "Wind" because I see direction and flow that, to me resembles wind pattern. The bold red and black resemble the strength of a storm. The yellows and lighter colors on top are like clouds above the unstable air.
In creating this painting, I discovered the skill involved in conveying my thoughts onto canvas. I have to admit with this first abstract I didn't know where I was going at first but then realized the flow of the painting and I went with it. That is the beauty of painting with acrylic paints It's much easier to change and redirect a painting with acrylics than oil, but that is a subject for another blog :).
It took me about a year to attempt another abstract painting only because the ideas did not come to me. I wanted to do something a little more structured and controlled. I am very proud of this next abstract painting because although it looks out of control it really is not. I saw it in my mind's eye before putting on canvas. This painting I call "Peace Behind Disorder". This abstract also has bold colors but the calmness behind the disarray is peaceful.
I like this painting a lot because it gives me the feeling that there is order and stability behind the chaos. I used a pallet knife to create this painting. I like the lines it creates, and the mixture of colors blending together in a unique fashion.
I have more abstract art on my website "Artisticpaintsbybrendajean.com". They range from soft colorful flowers to angry passion. Abstract art does not have to have a meaning behind it. Some people don't see or feel anything, It is meaningless to some and that is ok because abstract art can be meaningless. In fact, the more meaningless the better because it depicts a departure from reality. And let's face it, isn't that what abstract art is anyway?
